Peter Heals a Lame Beggar, Gospel Light Curriculum, How to put a smile on God's face, Pre-Mothers Day Craft: Paper Beads

We have received materials from Gospel Light. Starting this week, we will use these materials to teach the kids every Sundays. It so happened that what we got is their Spring Lesson and it starts with the same topics discussed last Holy Week. We are now into studying God's Words - the Bible. Will begin using Spring Lesson 5 which is about Acts 3:1-16.

Bible Verses
Acts 3:1-16 New International Version (NIV)
Peter Heals a Lame Beggar

One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
Peter Speaks to the Onlookers

11 While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon’s Colonnade. 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.

Hear the word of God and obey it.

Message:
  • Helping out anyway we can puts smile on Jesus' face.
  • When we follow what Jesus told us to do, we make Him really glad.

Lesson Introduction:
It's already May, by next month it will be the start of classes once again. My regular three (3) questions for everyone to answer in front, one by one, that they may learn to speak in front of people are:
  1. What's my name - not all of the kids know each other
  2. What's my favorite thing to do to help my Mom or Dad at home
  3. Why I like that task
Once everyone has answered, will tell the class that as they help out at home, or anywhere - they are putting a smile on Jesus' face because that's what He asked us. Then will point them to the memory verse.

Lesson Time
Another person who followed what Jesus said is Peter and John. Will share the story of Acts 3:1-16 in Filipino first, showing them the story photos from Gospel Light. Before I begin though, will show them the stickers. They will all have a turn in getting one, and the one to volunteer to retell the story will get the extra stickers for him/herself.

Crafts Time
For Mom's Day the following week, we will make bracelets and necklaces out of paper beads. Will teach them how to make.

Steps to make paper beads using old magazine or glossy paper.

Putting God's Words First in My Life

After a half-month break from volunteer work for Sunday School, back again with the lesson about God's blessings to those who put His Words first in their lives and what will become of them compared to those who don't.

Bible Verse
Psalm 1 1 Blessed is the one who obeys the law of the Lord.
He doesn't follow the advice of evil people.
He doesn't make a habit of doing what sinners do.
He doesn't join those who make fun of the Lord and his law.
2 Instead, he takes delight in the law of the Lord.
He thinks about his law day and night.
3 He is like a tree that is planted near a stream of water.
It always bears its fruit at the right time.
   Its leaves don't dry up.
Everything godly people do turns out well.

Message

  1. God's Word is given as a direction to life, it is life's manual.
  2. When we read God's Word, we should reflect about it and apply in our lives.
Lesson Introduction
Will bring extra Bibles for those who don't have and will ask them to race to Psalm 1. First to get there will get to be the class leader. What does the class tycoon do? Will ask them, whatever additions they will choose, the class tycoon will be in charge of counting all the students and watching who will not behave properly.

Lesson Time
Psalm 1 talks about a strong tree planted with a steady supply of water - healthy and fruitful. Will show them photos of the world's tallest trees, and finally the Philippines' Millenium Tree:

Ask the kids how these trees became as big and strong.

After acknowledging their answer, will point out that just like this tree, people also need a lot of things to be strong and healthy. Count in my hand the answers.

Go back to the word, the part that says a righteous man is like a tree. Ask what is a righteous man. Following Ministry-to-Children.com's lead, will draw a bare tree trunk and let the kids paste the leaves with the virtues of a righteous man.

Conclude that righteousness is only possible through Christ. That's why once we receive Him in our hearts, we instantly - like magic, become aright! Pray with the kids to accept Him as Lord and Savior.

The Light in the Flatworld: Bible Recap and Jesus and Palm Sunday

Teaching the 7-8 year olds are much enjoyable for me because I am able to hear more about what they think. More interaction. Their able to express themselves really well, though some are shy to speak in front. There are also some who have a lot of stories to share and it's hard since I have to keep the lesson flowing.

How do you manage blurters in class? How do you address kids who want to say something even when it's not yet time for them to speak?

Class rules
After getting to know each other, this next session, will ask the kids for rules that we may follow in order for the class to be fun and worthwhile. Will post a big sheet of paper on the wall and write down their suggestions. My target is for them to acknowledge sharing, teamwork and taking turns when talking.

Bible Verse
Psalm 119: 105 Your word is like a lamp that shows me the way. It is like a light that guides me.

Message
Since this Sunday is Palm Sunday, would like the kids to learn:

  1. The story of Palm Sunday - Jesus entering Jerusalem on a colt aware of what would happen to Him
  2. The various traditions done on Palm Sunday
  3. How the Bible illustrates all of these
Lesson Introduction
Will be asking the kids if they know what they are celebrating that day. Once they've nailed that it's Palm Sunday, will tell them three things:
  • What I remember most fondly about Palm Sunday when I was still a kid
  • What I look forward to about the Lenten season
  • What I want to do this coming Holy Week
Afterwards, will be asking the kids to come in front one by one, those who are ready, to answer those three questions. I try to do this for them to be used to standing in front and speaking to a group.

Lesson Time
Will then show them this video of the origin of Palm Sunday by Curtis Burthe of Vimeo. Thanks, Curtis for sharing this!

The Story of Palm Sunday by Children from Curtis Buthe on Vimeo.

Before playing the video, will tell them to pay attention since we will be doing something fun afterwards. This is to entice them to concentrate and watch.

Will point them to Matthew 21:1-11, pausing as I read, and asking them to fill in, it to check they remember the story.

Afterwards, will be handling out to them a comic strip with blank frames to fill in and color and write the words of the story.

Matthew 21:9

The Light in the Flatworld 2 - 7 to 8 year old lesson about the Bible, trivia about the Bible

Our head teacher told me last time that I am now to handle 7-8 year old class in the second service, 10am-12noon. The same topic would be discussed until April 8, Resurrection Sunday. It is my first time to handle such and am eager since these age group are more able to handle formal classroom setting. Though our class is still informal, we may hold more conversations and interactivity.

Bible verse

My two kids and I made this poster of the memory verse.

Message

  1. To encourage the kids to read the Bible regularly
  2. To introduce to the kids the habit of making a journal of interesting things they read on the Bible
Lesson Introduction
Since it will be my first time to teach this group of kids, an introduction about us is in order. Will be telling them who I am, what I do for a living, and why I volunteered to be part of the Sunday School ministry.

In turn, will be telling that I would love to hear about them to. If they may come in front and say their name and what they would like to become when they grow up.

Lesson Time
We will be focusing on the New Testament (Bagong Tipan). Will give a short summary of the things learned last session about the Bible - its two parts: old and new.

Will ask them if they know what testament is. Testament may mean different things:
  1. Proof or evidence
  2. Law
  3. A covenant (agreement) between God and His people
  4. Two main parts of the Bible
Then will tell them these trivia, at the same time handling out to them several Bible for them to check. Two or three kids may share with a Bible depending on the number of the kids. As I say the facts, they may verify it, or they may fill in the phrases of what I will say:

  • There are 66 books in the Bible. The Bible is a library on its own.
  • Its main parts are the Old and New Testament
  • Old Testament has 39 books = Old (3 letters) Testament (9 letters) = 39
  • New Testament has 27 books = New (3 letters) Testament (9 letters) = 3 multiply by 9 is 27
  • The New Testament has five parts which are:
  1. Gospels (4 books)
  2. Acts (1 book)
  3. St. Paul's Letters + Hebrew - (14 books)
  4. General Letters - (7 books)
  5. Revelation - (1 book)
You may download the PDF file of that here.

Lastly, will show to them a sample journal. Will tell them that it may be any notebook. They may write poems they find on the Bible, verses that they like. Thoughts. Stories.

The Light in the Flatworld

Bible Verse
Psalm 119:105 Your word is like a lamp that shows me the way. It is like a light that guides me.

Message

  1. The Bible is the most important book. It is God's message to us.
  2. We should read it regularly.
Lesson Introduction
Treasure Hunt

I have created flash cards of the letters B-I-B-L-E.

Will be posting them on the wall far apart. Then will place three boxes filled with various items for the kids to check. Some items will have the stickers "Get me!" and the label of what item they are. Once they find all five items, we will form the world BIBLE.

I have chosen these five things, with the following explanations:

B - ball (the Bible starts with the letter B. In Filipino, it is Bibliya)
I - insect (insects are small and of different kind. The Bible said God made all of them.)
B - ear (My daughter loves teddy bears. She sleeps embracing her teddy bear. May the Bible be as precious to you to)
L - etter (The Bible is God's letter to us. We should read it to know his message for us)
E - egg (Like an egg that is white, the Bible tells us the things that can make us white as snow because God will clean us from our hearts)

Download PDF printable of this activity here (page 1)and here(page 2).

Lesson Time
Will be showing different types of Bibles - mine, my kids' and the one available in the Sunday School. Will explain to them that the Bible are stories and lessons from God to His children - us.

We read it everyday because we want to learn what to do. Will explain that personally, I get inspiration (songs that we know come from the Bible), enlightenment (the things we should do) as well as stories like those about Jonah, Noah, Adam and Jesus.

Will ask them these questions:

  1. Who is their favorite Bible character?
  2. Do they have Bibles at home?
  3. Do they read it?
Then lastly, will tell them how to take care of their Bibles.
  • Hold it properly.
  • Don't tear the pages.
  • Put a cover.
  • Don't let it get wet.

God Made All Men

Bible Verse
John 13: 34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

Message:

  1. We have been commanded to LOVE one another as Jesus showed us how much He loves us - let the preschoolers aged 5 and below understand how it is to love the way Jesus loves.
  2. One another means everyone - who are the people I should love?
Lesson Introduction:
Holding a drawing of a big heart, will ask them what they see? Download a PDF printable of a heart here.

As the little ones answer, will ask them what does our heart do? How it serves us? What kind of feelings it feels.

Lesson Time:
Digital - How Do I Feel With This?
Will be showing the kids photos of different actions and will ask them what the kids in the photo feel. This is so they will associate an action or situation to a feeling, as kids do not know yet to identify what they feel as being pissed, afraid, hurt, etc.

Afraid - why is she scared? Photo copyright of thepinkboss.com
Bored - sleepy dog Photo copyright of howismyface.com

Curious - she's listening to something and learning Photo copyright of   OOSH Ana Halah

Spiritual - Who is My Neighbor
As the kids find out that different situations make them feel different emotions, that's okay. However, we should choose to feel the right way no matter what. We may feel scared, but we may choose to love still.

Will be showing them a modernized video of the Good Samaratan Parable, copyright of Kidmo.

Practical - How have I been Loving to my Neighbor Today?
After watching, will tell the kids that as young as they are they may do loving and kind acts to their neighbors. Ask them what are the good things they have done to their neighbor today, or yesterday. Or what they plan to do tomorrow?

Social - Heart Cards for Craft Time
Have prepared folded colored board cards that may be used as greeting cards. In front is a figure of a heart drawn on it. The kids may paste small bits of recycled paper to make a mosaic heart.

Inside, they may write their message to anyone they wish to give the card to.

And if we still have time, will also show them this as we wait for their parents/fetchers. Video copyright of Max7.org from aldrincenalimosnero.

God Made the Church: One Family, One Body in Christ

Bible Verse
Ephesians 2:19 "So you are no longer strangers and outsiders. You are citizens together with God's people. You are members of God's family."

Click here to download the sticker template of the Memory Verse above

Message
  1. We have a family in Church and they are the people we meet at Sunday School.
  2. The Church is not a house or a building, it is a group of people.
  3. Christ is the head of the Church.
Lesson Introduction
Line Game

Got this game from the movie The Freedom Writers, when teacher Miss Erin Gruwell drew a line on the floor. She asked her students to go near the line if their answers are yes to her questions, or if they agree with her statements, which were about their experiences - her students have a multi-racial background where discrimination and dealing with gangs are common.

Will be drawing a line on the floor too, then will ask the kids to step on the line if their answer to my questions are yes, or if they agree with what I said. My questions will be:

  • I love to go with my parents to Church on Sundays.
  • I have one friend in Sunday School.
  • I have two friends in Sunday School.
  • I have more than two friends in Sunday School.
  • My best friend is in Sunday School.
  • I love the songs and videos at Sunday School.
  • I like my teachers in Sunday School.
  • I love the food in Sunday School.
  • I will go to Sunday School again next Sunday.

Lesson Time
Spiritual - Who is the Most Important
Will be telling a story about cooperation and how everyone is important using finger puppets. The story goes this way:
Ako ang Bida
Nang matapos ng likhain ng Diyos ang limang magkakaibigan, nagusap-usap ang mga ito.
Hinlalaki: Ako ay malusog. Maliit lang, pero malakas. Kung hindi dahil sa akin, hindi magiging ok. Kaya ako ang pinaka-bida!
Hintuturo: Hindi totoo yan! Ako ang bida! Ako si hintuturo. Dahil sa akin, kahit ano, pwedeng ituro. Ako ay mataas, maliksi at laging ginagamit pang-turo.

Nagkatinginan silang lahat at nagbati-bati. Mula noon, lagi ng nagtutulungan ang lima. Alam nilang magkaka-iba man ang kanilang katangian, walang nakahihigit sa sinuman.

Social, Practical - Finger Puppets

Will be bringing materials that will let the kids make their own finger puppets using the procedures from TLC.

Will be asking the first few kids to finish to show their puppets and create their short story on the spot  - with our puppets. We will be conversing behind the puppet stage using our created puppets.

Digital - Magpie
If there is still time, will let read the an ebook using the iPad.

God Made Our Family

Bible Verse
Ephesians 6:2-3 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Message

  1. Our family where we belong to is God's gift.
  2. Kids have different types of families.
  3. There is good behavior at home that make God smile. Let's do that always.
Lesson Introduction
Family Goes to Town

Same concept as the relay game Maria Goes to Town. Group the kids into two. Best to have a minimum of four members. There will be four sets of 'costumes':
  • for dad (necktie, belt, socks, etc.)
  • for mom (necklace, bag, ladies' shoes, etc.)
  • for boy kid (backpack, cap, ball, etc.)
  • for girl kid (doll, bib, etc.)
Depending on the kids' energy level and capability, determine the number of rounds before a winner is proclaimed.

Lesson Time
These following sections may be interchanged depending on the class' response or over-all attitude. I would like to think of it as a whole pack of tools. :) Best to be very armed as some activities may finish quicker than planned.

Digital
Part of my research for this lesson is coming across the book by James Mollison: Where Children Sleep It is a picture book of kids photographed and put side-by-side with the places they sleep in.

Where Children Sleep: James Mollison

Here's a link to the PDF file of the presentation from this book.

If given the time, will let the kids show where other kids their age live in. This is to expose them to the reality of being comfortable, poor, privileged or struggling as these kids are around the world.

Oriental
As Filipino children, there are responsibilities and good behavior expected and desired from my preschool students. Will be printing out these photos of these actual kids, along with clipart of bad habits. They are to encircle the ones they choose. Once everyone has finished, will be calling on each one to explain at least one of their choice in front.

Helping out at home
Pagmamano sa nakatatanda

Saying Please
Saying Thank You
Pagsabi ng Po at Opo
Sharing toys

Spiritual, Practical
Present a skit where teacher/s may pretend as preschool kids showing good and bad behavior. The voice-over may be the kid reading the script below, or a colleague. The teacher acts out the story and afterwards, the kids will be asked which among the two they should be at home.

Si Lisa at Risa
May dalawang magkaibigan
Pareho silang limang taong gulang

Kaya tatay at nanay nya
Laging malungkot dahil sa kanya

Si Risa naman ay kabaligtaran
Mahilig mang magbasa at maglaro
Sa gawaing bahay
Siya'y talagang mapagkakatiwalaan.

Pag-gising sa umaga,
Nililigpit ang kanyang kama
Platong kinainan sa lamesa
Hinuhugasan nya

Alagang hayop at mga laruan
Pinapaliguan at nililigpit
Nakatago ng maayos
Pati ang kanyang mga ipit

Sino kaya sa dalawang ito
Ang batang kagaya mo?

God Made You and Me

Bible Verse

Genesis 1:27 New International Version (NIV) 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Message

  • God created me. He formed all parts of my body.
  • God created all of human beings around the world - different and unique.
  • I am made in His image.
  • I am commanded to take care of all His other creations.
Lesson Introduction

Show up a mirror. Pass it around and ask what they see?

Then, get the mirror and look into it. Describe my face as I see it. Look for the perfect time to say that whenever we look at God's creation, we see a bit of God.

Explain further that it seems like as God created us, He gave us all a bit of Him. Together, along with all His creation, we may see His handiwork, and therefore know Him too.

Lesson Time
Spiritual
Tell the story of Creation again, this time telling it the way those two theater actress did it once upon a story telling time in Fully Booked. Using different voices, moving all around the place, using props, and engaging the kids - interacting with them, asking them, encouraging them to talk to the other character as the story goes along.

Props needed:

  1. Scarf - When I put it on, it means it's story time and they have to listen
  2. Flashlight / Mobile Phone - Turn off light as God didn't create the world yet so it was dark. Then turn on flashlight/mobile phone when He said, "let there be light" and turn on light.
  3. Blue cloth - Wave it high to signify the sky for Day 2 (the scarf may be used too, as the sky)
  4. Brown cloth - Spread it and step on it when God formed the land, all the rest of the floor not covered is the sea
  5. Plush toy shaped like moon, star, sun - I only have the star, so will probably just cut out the moon and the sun

As they learn that God created man, including all of us, will proceed to show them a selection of photos of different people wearing their traditional costume. This may point out that there are different races around the world and we are all unique and equal.

Will be going to flickr for this.
